Song in the Silence

I have been reading a lot lately, when I ride the bus too and from work. I’ve enjoyed all the new books I’ve read, but recently I’ve started to go back and re-read older favorites. It has been a thrill to rediscover the magic in these books that I have read many times.

One of my absolute favorite books of all time is Song in the Silence by Elizabeth Kerner. It is the author’s first book, but you would never know it by reading it. From the very first page, it pulls you into its world. It is fairly classical mid-high fantasy, right down to the pseudo-feudal society that’s far nicer for the lowest levels of society than they would ever really be.

But it is written so well, and in such an unusual style that it just works. To start with, it’s written from a first person perspective, as if the main character was actually telling you the story. It’s highly engaging, and works better than I ever would have anticipated. Also, the main character shares a trait that I believe many of us Fantasy and Sci Fi readers share. She longs to go adventuring, and her dearest and fondest dream is to go meet the True Dragons.

I won’t spoil the book for those who haven’t read it, but I will highly reccomend it.
